Hi, Guys! How are we doing?
I have been asked about post/message dated 01/01/11, Give Us A Feel!
“Why do you change Ophiel’s techniques from his books and courses?” It is ‘strange’ to me, (sender) that
anyone would think/feel this!
To my ‘eye’ I have ‘changed’ nothing! To my ‘eye’ it is simply ‘extending’ or ‘varying’ Ophiel’s presentation
of his techniques for those of us who are ‘waiting’ for their ‘one-day!’ (See/Read earlier posts/messages). It is
done to show that there is ‘more’ to Ophiel’s work than just what is printed on the page. Even Ophiel himself,
‘encouraged’ his students to ‘push’ his work forwards. (I, me, sender am ‘surprised’ that there is/are so few of
them doing this?) Ophiel in his books, writings and vignettes, says to ‘trust no one, until you can ‘see it’ (Astral
Light) for yourself!’ This is ‘sound advice!’ but what?? Do you ‘do?’ in the ‘meantime?’
The ‘technique’ is a ‘simple one!’ TURN YOUR ‘ATTENTION’ (Conscious-ness) AWAY FROM
THE/YOUR OUTER, OUTER PHYSICALLY PHYSICAL WORLD AND FOCUS IT (Conscious-ness)
IN/ON TO YOUR ‘INNER WORLD!?’ (Repeatedly) THE MORE TIMES YOU DO THIS, THE MORE
YOUR ‘AWAKE-NESS’ ‘AWARE-NESS’ STEPS UP! INCREASES! UNTIL THE TWO HALVES/TWO
SIDES/TWO PARTNERS/TWO BROTHERS!?! ‘MESH’ ‘GET IN GEAR’ ‘BECOME ONE!?!’ AND THEN,
ONE-DAY! YOU FIND YOUR SELF, ‘OUT????’ (IN): Here, read it for yourself page 25, in the e-book,
version of Ophiel’s book, The Art & Practice of Astral Projection, The Little System:
“ONE DAY THE TWO BODIES WILL FUSE INTO ONE BODY AND YOU WILL OPEN ANOTHER

when their ‘one day?’ would come, [The/Their, DAY OF SALVATION!?!]) I know I have ‘sent’ the above
information for you before, and yet, here it is again! NOT EVEN THE GREAT OPHIEL COULD ‘TELL!?’
WHEN SOMEONE/ANYONE WAS GOING HAVE THEIR, ONE-DAY!? (When they would ‘project’)
SO IN THE MEAN TIME! YOU JUST HAVE TO ‘SWEAT IT OUT?’ ‘TAKE IT ON THE CHEEK?’ ‘KEEP
UP THE GOOD WORK!?’ ‘PERSEVERE?’ ETC, ETC, ETC! NONE OF THIS SHIT HAS, ANYTHING!!
ANYTHING!!?! TO ‘DO??!’ WITH OUTER, OUTER PHYSICALLY PHYSICAL EARTH!!! (All of these
statements/expressions are to ‘do’ with ‘REPETITIONS!!!?’) Read this, it is from the same Ophiel book, The
Art & Practice of Astral Projection, page 32, of the chapter, The Dream Method. This quote is for you, and
those of you, who persevered with the two files in the files section of our group, numbers 7 & 8 Flying Rolls,
2010. We (sender) have just been all through this/these two paragraphs with you, for the year, 2010, in order to
‘encourage you’ so that, YOU DO NOT GIVE UP!! IN YOUR, GREAT WORK!!?!
“The “trouble” you encounter and the dire things that old maid occultists warn you against, all the times in the
past that you read about Astral projection, is really nothing but this DIFFERENCE that exists between the
different planes and what happens when you try to act on the Inner planes the same way that you act on earthphysical.
Some old maid New Thought practitioner got out there one time by accident, and when she tried to
come, she went, and it scared the wits out of her. So instead of trying to find out what was wrong she labelled it
all hell and warned everyone to stay away. I want you to understand this fully so I will repeat it again – On the
Inner planes you have to ACT in accordance with the laws that govern that plane which laws are different than
the laws that govern the physical plane. And until you learn these laws, and MOVE by them, you are going to
find yourself in a very peculiar position when you try to do something. When you do learn these laws, and act

Read this part again from the above quote: “On the Inner planes you have to ACT in accordance with the laws

When I was younger, and I used to ‘teach!?’ ‘instruct!?’ this stuff, I would point out to ‘non-projecting’ folks
that, ETHERIC PLANE MANIPULATIONS, IN AND ON THE MALKUTH EARTH PLANE, IS/ARE
DONE/ACHIEVED THROUGH ‘REPETITIONS’ IN AND ON THE/THEIR OUTER, OUTER
PHYSICALLY PHYSICAL PLANE!!! AND THEY WOULD JUST TAKE IT FROM THERE!!!? This is
was/why it is/was ‘recommended’ ‘suggested’ that you ‘do/practice’ your Cosmic Egg Exercise two minutes
per day, minimum, but as many times as you ‘feel’ that you would like to! WHY? BECAUSE REPETITIONS
MAKE US STRONGER!?!
NOT THE LENGTH TIME THAT YOU PRACTICE!! NO!!! BUT THE NUMBER OF TIMES THAT YOU
PRACTICE!!!
It is ‘important’ to your Etheric Work/Workings, that you ‘grasp/understand’ this ‘PRINCIPLE!?’ (Repetitions)

posts/messages is/are for the ‘non-projectors’ to give them a ‘slightly different’ view point that they can ‘USE’
while they ‘wait?’ for the/their ‘one-day?’)

(There is/are ‘neurons’ firing away within the brain, working to keep your balance, and so the Outer Brain is
‘engaged?’ ‘involved?’ ‘tied-up?’ ‘BOUND?’) OFF TO THE SIDE? IS ANOTHER PART/PIECE OF YOUR
BRAIN, WHICH IS ‘WATCHING??’ ‘OBSERVING??’ ALL THIS!? (The MALKUTH EARTH SIDE) AND

In Ophiel’s Ritual, you are to ‘stand still’ in the centre of your circle, and watch/feel the Four Winds, COME
TO/TOWARDS YOU!!! See/Read where Ophiel’s writes, that, YOU! COMMAND THESE WINDS!! NOT
THEY YOU!!! (YOU DOING THE RITUAL ‘DO NOT MOVE!!)
For me, (sender) I never or didn’t always have time or the place to ‘do’ my Ritual, (for four years or so, I was in
the merchant navy) so I did the Cosmic Egg Exercise instead! Thus I (sender) never ‘lost out’ in any ‘practices’.
Let us finish off now! Let us use ‘another!!!!’ variation on the theme of Ophiel, for illustration purposes:
1. Read Ophiel’s vignette, An Exercise in Preliminary Projection.
2. Determine when you are ‘awake’ up and about during your day, that when you ‘awake’ in the
morning that you are going to ‘lie/be still’ and watch/observe.
3. See/feel all about your body, your, Cosmic Egg Symbols.
4. See/feel your body, FLOATING IN THEM!
This is a very ‘nice way’ to ‘start your day!’
Number 2, in the above is/are, your ‘emotions’ which is/are your Astral Plane = Emotions/Imaginations =
Clairvoyance, which is/are your ‘Determination = Destination = Desire = Objective, Goal, Aim!! To, lie still
and watch.
Number 3, in the above is/are your ‘visualisations’ which is/are your Etheric Plane = Attractions/Rejections =
Psychic, is/are how you ‘feel = choice/choose’ about the/these/your Symbols.
Number 4, in the above is/are your ‘Malkuth Earth Powers’ to ‘remain still’ and ‘NOT MOVE!?’
THUS YOU HAVE ‘ALL FOUR PLANES WORKING FOR YOU!?’
1. The Plane of ‘Air’ in your ‘idea’ of ‘doing/practicing’ this exercise = Archetype/Stamp/Pattern.
2. The Plane of ‘Fire’ as you ‘go about’ doing the exercise =
Emotions/Imaginations/Desire/Expansion.

THEN SO TO, DOES YOUR SENSE/FEELING OF OTHER’S COSMIC EGG ABOUT YOU!?! WHEN
YOU REACH THIS STATE/STAGE YOU BECOME, WHAT IS ‘KNOWN’ AS, PSYCHIC OR

Newsletter of the Friends of Ophiel
Vol 1 No 3
Welcome to the third issue of The Astral Light. Friends of Ophiel, founded by Janine Chapman and Nikola Kranjovic in June of 1994 is now two years old. We have come a long way in spreading the word of the existence of the group and getting the newsletter off the ground. We have members from New Jersey, California, Michigan, New York, Canada and Mexico. We want to go on from here to attract new members, improve the quality of the newsletter, offer more services to members, and get them more actively involved.
At this point, Mirazel would like to "drop the veil" for one short instant and give some biographical background.
Mirazel was born on the winter solstice in New York City (Manhattan) in 1994 at 431 Riverside Drive in a large apartment facing the Hudson River. She was reared by her mother and her aunt, both of whom have advanced degrees from Columbia University. At about age 3 she acquired two imaginary playmates and an imaginary dog with 10 (imaginary) puppies. She kept these creatures in a large, walk-in closet in her room. Later she posted a skull and crossbones on the door of the closet. She would sometimes go and sit on the "coffin" (cedar chest) inside the closet and meditate. As a child she read Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe and subscribed to Monsters of Filmland magazine. She began writing at age 5. Hallowe'en has always been her favourite holiday.
Mirazel got her first job at age 14 months modeling baby hats for Montgomery Ward's catalogue. She went on to a successful career as a child model and actress, appearing on early radio and television and in one off Broadway play. She attended Professional Children's School, Corpus Christi School and Julia Richman High School. While in high school, she was a fan of John Zacherley, TV's original Horror Show Host, whom she met on three occasions when she visited the studio in Times Square from which his show was televised.
At age 7 and again at age 11, Mirazel attended French schools in the south of France and traveled extensively with her mother and aunt in France, Italy, Spain, England and Ireland.
In 1961 at age 16, Mirazel left New York to attend Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. She majored in French literature, specializing in the French symbolist poets. It was at FSU that she began her study of the occult through extensive sampling of the Sydney Hamilton Diamond Collection of occult literature at FSU's Strozier Library.
In 1968 Mirazel moved to Boston, Massachussetts, where she taught French, Spanish, Italian and Latin at the elementary and high school levels. In 1970 she completed a correspondence course in astrology. She then became a student of OPHIEL through his Correspondence Course in the Foundations of Occult Knowledge. Upon completion of the course, she began a correspondence with OPHIEL which lasted for several years.
Mirazel met OPHIEL in Boston in 1973. She accompanied him on a visit to the Christian Science Center in Boston and to the Mary Baker Eddy House in Brookline, Mass.
In 1972-3 Mirazel worked with a French theatre group, Le Th'eatre du Ble' Noir which performed a type of stylized, ritual drama infuenced by the medieval mystery plays and the Noh plays of Japan. From 1978-1986 Mirazel was active in the cast of players who performed the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Exeter Street Theater in Boston and at the Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge, Mass.
Simultaneously with her above activities, Mirazel privately followed the series of initiatory Golden Dawn rituals, studied Qabalah, and began the research for her book Quest for Dion Fortune. In January 1974, she travelled to England to meet with W.E Butler, Kenneth Grant and others who knew Dion Fortune.
In 1974 Mirazel received an M.S in Foreign Language Education and in 1983 a Master's degree in Library Science, both from Florida State University. Her book Quest for Dion Fortune was published in August of 1993 by Samuel Weiser, Inc. During this time she also operated Mystic Systems Book Service, an out-of-print occult book search service and taught a class in Qabalah.
From September through December of 1993 Mirazel studied Japanese and in March of 1994 she spent three weeks in Japan. Upon returning to the U.S she spent four months living and working in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Mirazel reads or speaks 7 languages. She is currently working on Fallen Angel, an occult romance set in New Orleans. She lives in Tallahassee, Florida with her teenage son.
Mirazel would like Friends of OPHIEL members to write, telling her their feelings as to how the group should develop. she wants to receive accounts of members' experiences with any of OPHIEL'S systems and any interesting biographical material of members. She also welcomes poetry, short stories, art work, magical diagrams and short articles on relevant topics.
Starting in the September issue of GNOSIS Magazine, Friends of OPHIEL will be running a classified ad which will be continued in future issues. We have much hope that new members will come into the fold and that Friends of OPHIEL will continue with OPHIEL'S proud tradition of active and scholarly work in practical magic.
Mirazel does not consider herself to be OPHIEL'S "successor." That person will appear later when the time is right. Mirazel wishes to utilize her powers to exert a positive influence in the Mysteries, a balance to the forces generated by Aleister Crowley. OPHIEL'S works and teachings are a perfect vehicle for accomplishing this work. Mirazel hopes that OPHIEL'S spirit will live on through Friends of OPHIEL.

THE ELEMENTAL FIRES AND THEIR COMPOUNDS
(The following is a summary of information taught by OPHIEL in his Correspondence Course in the Foundations of Occult Knowledge. It reinforces and expands on material given in his books-)
AIR. Elemental Air is the quality of Motion. The ability to move or to "get moving" is the pre-requisite to any work. In any process it is the beginning or seed idea, the "prime mover," the impetus that motivates us. In the Kabbalah system it corresponds to Atziluth, the Archetypal or Mental Plane wherein ideas have their inception. It is the first letter (Yod) of the magical formula YHVH. Yod means "hand of God" that holds all creation latent in its grasp.
These forces do not occur in the physical world in a pure state. In isolating them this way, we are creating an abstracted or purified concept which exists only in our minds. Because of this, these force-concepts do not obey the laws of the Physical Plane, nor can they be described by physical plane words, except symbolically. Man invented symbols in an effort to convey to other men some idea of the nature of these forces. These forces, in combination were personified in the shape of gods and goddesses for the same reason. These symbols or representations must never be taken for the forces themselves which are a great deal more than the symbols can express. One of the conventional ways of representing the four basic forces was as the Four Directions or Quarters of the Earth: East, South, West, North. These Quarters were further personified into the Four Winds: Eurus, Notus, Zephyrus, Boreas by the ancient Greeks. Their equivalent occur in other mythological systems as well.
FIRE. Elemental Fire is the quality of Expansion. It is the creative or gesstation period of an idea when it "grows on you," ie is enlarged upon and developed in detail. It corresponds to Briah or the Astral Plane, the upper part of which is also called the Storehouse of Images because it is here that ideas "take shape" in the form of mental images. This is the realm of the imagination, of wishes and desires, and in the formula YHVH it is the Heh or "window" into your mind through which you visualize the objects/goals of your wishes and desires.
WATER. Elemental Water is the quality of Contraction. It is a formative period when action is undertaken to make the image real. This is Yetzirah or the Etheric Plane, the realm of our feelings, which breathes life into our imaginings, inspiring and arousing us to action. In the formula YHVH, it is the letter Vav meaning "nail" which symbolizes the act of fastening yourself (your emotions) to the image of your desire/goal so that in your mind's eye it is yours already. In the process, the elaborate image shrinks to more normal, realistic proportions, and the project becomes feasible and a plan is made to carry it out.
EARTH. Elemental Earth is the end result of the previous work. It is Assiah, the Physical Plane whose quality is solidity, density, inertia. It is the fulfillment of desire, the fruits of labor, no longer the view from an inner door (Heh), but a real live scene (Heh final). The North Quarter is said to be the source from which all things start and to which all things return. In Earth or "the real world" are the materials we need to create new matter or matters. Each embodied life whether animal, mineral or vegetable is an example of this process.

WHAT IS THE KABBALAH?

The student of magic invariably comes upon the word "Kabbalah" or "Qabalah" or "Cabala" at some point in his or her researches. Then, s/he soon becomes aware of its reputation as a great source or holy book. As in every quest of the occult variety, the way is laid with traps and pifalls of all kinds. Dense fog alternates with dazzling mirages and, if the student is without a map, s/he may have to resort to trial and error methods to find what s/he wants. In this situation, a good book is like a luminous sign on a dark and windy back road and a good teacher like a friendly stranger who gives you a flashlight and points the way.
The word "Kabbalah" comes from a Hebrew word root meaning "receive" and so means "reception" or "tradition". The knowledge which the Kabbalah contains was believed to have been received by word of mouth from one generation of Jews to another. Of the many writings which can be included under the word "Kabbalah," the Sepher Yetzirah (Book of Formation) and the Sepher Ha Zohar (Book of Splendor) are considered the chief texts.
Legend claimed that the Sepher Yetzirah was received from God by the patriarch Abraham who then told it to his sons, who transmitted it to their sons, and so on until it was at last written down by certain wise men. The true author's name is unknown. According to the late Gershom Scholem, foremost authority on Kabbalah, it was written "by a Jewish Neo-Pythagorean some time between the third and sixth century." (On the Kabbalah and Its Symbolism, p. 167.) The Sepher Yetzirah was published at Mantua in 1952 but a Latin translation by the monk William Postel had already appeared in 1582. It was translated into German in 1830 and into French by Meyer Lambert in 1887.
The Sepher Yetzirah is divided into six chapters. The first presents God, the Great Architect of the Universe, and the ten Sephiroth, the messengers or Spirits of God, who create the world at his command. The last five chapters deal with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet which are said to be "Instruments of Creation," and therefore sacred and powerful.
The Sepher Ha Zohar is a miscellaneous collection of writings: interpretations of Scripture, sayings, oracles, revelations. The first two parts were written around 1280 by a Spanish rabbi named Moses de Leon. The third part had another author whose name is not known and was composed around 1300.
The two parts which are attributed to Moses de Leon belong to a class of mystical literature called "pseudepigrapha" in which the person writing gives the impression that someone else is the author. De Leon hid behind the mask of Rabbi Simeon ben Yohai, a religious teacher of the period of the Emperor Antoninus in the second century A.D. A story is told in the Talmud that Rabbi Simeon once spoke publicly against Rome. The Emperor, hearing of this, ordered that he be put to death, whereupon the rabbi took refuge with his son in a cave, dwelling there for twelve years praying and studying until the death of the Emperor. The Zohar purports to be the fruit of this experience.

2) Male-Female or God and His Shekinah. God is at once potentiality (male) and actuality (female). In his masculine aspect, God is beyond the grasp of understanding; in his feminine aspect (Shekinah), He is understandable and perceptible, even obvious.
3) Inner-Outer. Everything in the material world has a counterpart in the spiritual world. The letter of Scripture is a veil for an inner, spiritual truth.
The source which inspired the authors of the Zohar was a philosophical and mystical literature called "Kabbalah" which consisted of ancient commentaries on Scripture as well as mystical writings by Jewish scholars. This literature developed among the Jews after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans (64-70 A.D). From this time on the Jews maintained a continuity with their past heritage by their devotion to the study of their religious literature (the Torah, or Law) and during the recurrent persecution of Jews in Europe in the Middle Ages, an increasing number of Jews were drawn into the mysteries of the Kabbalah which hinted at a coming redemption.
The Jews were not always immune to outside currents of thought. According to one theory, they were heavily influenced in the sixth century B.C by the Persian teacher Zoraster. Gnostic ideas crept in in the first and second centuries A.D. In the twelth century in Moslem Spain, Jewish thought was receptive to the concepts of the Greek-Arabic philosophy of the Islamic culture, in particular of Sufism, a mystical sect of Mohammedanism.
Since the Zohar was written in Aramaic, it was inaccessible to most scholars until it was translated into French by Jean de Pauly in the early 1900's. In the seventeenth century a German noble, Christian Knorr von Rosenroth, wrote a book on Jewish theosophy entitled Kabbala Denudata, a highly inaccurate work which regarded a little treatise called the "Book of Concealment" as the chief text of the Zohar wheras it was really only a small part. The Kabbala Denudata did, however, include a Latin translation of three texts. Unfortunately, this was the only translation available to students before the twentieth century and many people accepted Rosenroth's opinion that the Book of Concealment was the Zohar itself. The value of the French translation has been questioned by Jewish critics but two good translations in English are now available.
Due to the extremely obscure nature of the subject matter, as well as to the lack of adequate translation and commentary, Kabbalistic ideas suffered much misinterpretation and degredation. It was believed by many, for example, that the Kabbalah taught the art of evoking spirits. Neither the Zohar nor the Sepher Yetzirah contain this type of information but both were used by Jews and non-Jews for magical purposes. The Sepher Yetzirah includes the doctrine of the sacred and divine nature of the Hebrew alphabet and claims a power inherent in certain Divine and Angelic Names. The symbolic nature of this doctrine was misunderstood by many persons who attempted to apply it in a literal sense. The Zohar discusses evil spirits and dream interpretation and contains the doctrine of signatures or correspondences in which the essence of a thing is discovered by remarking its superficial characteristics. These miscellaneous doctrines gave rise in the Middle Ages to ceremonial magic, which included witchcraft, demonology, and sorcery. Writings on these subjects began to appear in fourteenth century Europe, written in Latin, and culminated in the French and Latin Grimoires and Clavicles of Black Magic.

Another popular misunderstanding regarding the Kabbalah was that it was written in a code, the key to which was known only to "initiates". This idea may have been a misinterpretation of the traditional Hebrew methods of interpreting Scripture. These methods were:
1. Gematria.
Letters of a word are given numerical value and the sum of the word is used to explain its "inner" meaning.
2. Notarikon.
Each letter of a word is taken as the first letter of another word or the first letters of each word in a sentence are combined to form another word.
3. Temura.
Changing the position of letters in a word or sentence.
In the nineteenth century, modern occultism had its birth in the writings of Eliphas Levi. His knowledge of the Kabbalah came from two books: "La Kabbale" by Adolphe Franck, first published in 1843 and Solomon Munk's "Me'lange de Philosophie Juive et Arabe" published in 1859. Although far from perfect, these books are examples of the first intelligent research on the Kabbalah. Levi himself had no knowledge of Hebrew or Aramaic and was unacquainted with either the Sepher Yetzirah or the Zohar. Levi's principle works are his "History of Magic" and "Transcendental Magic".
Levi possessed a tremendous power to inspire others and ten years after his death, two of his followers, Gerard Encause and Stanislas de Guaita, started a school of western occultism the purpose of which was, among other things, to study the Kabbalah. Encausse published a book on the Kabbalah in 1892 under his pseudonym "Papus". It was not as extreme as Levi's books, but it was still only possible scholarship. Nevertheless, the way had been laid and with the appearance of the French version, direct access to the Kabbalah finally became possible. By this time, however, a host of fantastic notions had accumulated around it.

BRAIN CIRCUITS THAT CAUSE HALLUCINATIONS FOUND.
"The discovery could help researchers learn how to suppress schizophrenic hallucinations".

Scientists have identified brain circuits that appear to make schizophrenics hear voices and see things that aren't there. The findings may help scientists develop better treatments for hallucinations. Researchers studied six schizophrenic patients: five who heard voices and one who heard voices and saw things. The patients lay in a PET brain-scanning machine and were told to push a button when they heard voices.
Using new techniques to scan the brains and analyze the results, researchers found that during the hallucinations, interconnected areas deep within the brain's core and other areas on the surface were activated.
The core regions normally serve as meeting grounds for thoughts, emotion and perceptions, so that a person's current and past experiences can be compared with each other and associated with emotional reactions. The surface areas on the sides and the back of the brain normally process information from hearing and vision.
When the network of core and surface areas is turned on, "the brain is creating its own reality and believing it", said Dr. David Silbersweig, a neurologist and psychiatrist at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center. The work gives clues about where to look for the basic defect that turns on the hallucination circuitry, Silbersweig said. That could help scientists find new ways to suppress hallucinations.
Silbersweig, colleague Dr. Emily Stern and scientists from England reported the results in today's issue of the journal "Nature". The work was done in England. Dr. Michael Flaum, co-director of the Mental Health Clinical Research Center at the University of Iowa, said he found the work "a very credible study" that proposes an attractive hypothesis for how the brain produces schizophrenic hallucinations.
Hearing voices is the most common kind of hallucination in schizophrenia. Derogatory or threatening messages are especially common.
Five of the patients heard voices almost constantly despite taking medication.
"If they would just relax and be quiet, the voices would come to them", Silbersweig said.

"Touch of Night" * * *

In case any of you have a predjudice against romance novels which you can't back up because you've never read enough of them to form an intelligent opinion, I suggest you take a serious look at the genre. Among the plethora of poor and mediocre books are true gems, real artistic tours de force, fine well-written novels with loveable characters, compelling, believable plots and values worth emulating.
Of special interest are the romances now being published in the Fantasy, Futuristic, Time-Travel and Paranormal sub-genre. None of the authors I have read so far comes from an occult background, but some have done their research and are using their well-honed writing skills to offer terrific stories that will entertain both the occult and general reader.
One of these books is "Touch of Night" by Carin Rafferty. She tells a tale of a young woman named Ariel Dantes who goes in search of her twin brother Armand who is being held prisoner by a group of evil warlocks who belong to an old and reputable coven of white witches which they hope to take over by the use of force and black magic. The hero of the book, Lucien Morgret, a skilled white warlock who (women take note) is a man to die for. Rude and intimidating on the surface, as well as in possession of some awesome extra-sensory powers, in private he is gentle, sensitive and utterly sensual.
Personally, I have never read a literary rendition of magical polarity working that is as skillful and absorbing as Ms Rafferty's scenes in which Lucien and Ariel make love by candlelight within a magic circle drawn on the floor of Lucien's family home. I am not talking here only about the erotic power of these scenes, but also of the exquisite handling of a complicated interchange of trust, caring and respect as the lovers travel the age-old pathway that bonds a man to a woman.
Dion Fortune herself would have envied Ms. Rafferty's writing skills. For as much as all of us love Dion Fortune's novels for the occult elements, we are deceiving ourselves if we deem them anything more than passable fiction. DF's novels also fall down in their prim handling of sex and consequently of sexual polarity -- her central theme. I firmly believe that had Dion Fortune not died prematurely at age 56, she would have gone on to improve and perfect her fiction-writing skills.
You may have to go to a used paperback store to find "Touch of Night" and Ms Rafferty's other novels ("Touch of Magic", 1995 and "Touch of Lightning", 1996) but, trust me, it will be well worth the trip.

Newsletter of the Friends of Ophiel

Welcome to the third issue of The Astral Light. Friends of Ophiel, founded by Janine Chapman and Nikola Kranjovic in June of 1994 is now two years old. We have come a long way in spreading the word of the existence of the group and getting the newsletter off the ground. We have members from New Jersey, California, Michigan, New York, Canada and Mexico. We want to go on from here to attract new members, improve the quality of the newsletter, offer more services to members, and get them more actively involved.
At this point, Mirazel would like to "drop the veil" for one short instant and give some biographical background.
Mirazel was born on the winter solstice in New York City (Manhattan) in 1994 at 431 Riverside Drive in a large apartment facing the Hudson River. She was reared by her mother and her aunt, both of whom have advanced degrees from Columbia University. At about age 3 she acquired two imaginary playmates and an imaginary dog with 10 (imaginary) puppies. She kept these creatures in a large, walk-in closet in her room. Later she posted a skull and crossbones on the door of the closet. She would sometimes go and sit on the "coffin" (cedar chest) inside the closet and meditate. As a child she read Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe and subscribed to Monsters of Filmland magazine. She began writing at age 5. Hallowe'en has always been her favourite holiday.
Mirazel got her first job at age 14 months modeling baby hats for Montgomery Ward's catalogue. She went on to a successful career as a child model and actress, appearing on early radio and television and in one off Broadway play. She attended Professional Children's School, Corpus Christi School and Julia Richman High School. While in high school, she was a fan of John Zacherley, TV's original Horror Show Host, whom she met on three occasions when she visited the studio in Times Square from which his show was televised.
At age 7 and again at age 11, Mirazel attended French schools in the south of France and traveled extensively with her mother and aunt in France, Italy, Spain, England and Ireland.
In 1961 at age 16, Mirazel left New York to attend Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. She majored in French literature, specializing in the French symbolist poets. It was at FSU that she began her study of the occult through extensive sampling of the Sydney Hamilton Diamond Collection of occult literature at FSU's Strozier Library.
In 1968 Mirazel moved to Boston, Massachussetts, where she taught French, Spanish, Italian and Latin at the elementary and high school levels. In 1970 she completed a correspondence course in astrology. She then became a student of OPHIEL through his Correspondence Course in the Foundations of Occult Knowledge. Upon completion of the course, she began a correspondence with OPHIEL which lasted for several years.
Mirazel met OPHIEL in Boston in 1973. She accompanied him on a visit to the Christian Science Center in Boston and to the Mary Baker Eddy House in Brookline, Mass.
In 1972-3 Mirazel worked with a French theatre group, Le Th'eatre du Ble' Noir which performed a type of stylized, ritual drama infuenced by the medieval mystery plays and the Noh plays of Japan. From 1978-1986 Mirazel was active in the cast of players who performed the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Exeter Street Theater in Boston and at the Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge, Mass.
Simultaneously with her above activities, Mirazel privately followed the series of initiatory Golden Dawn rituals, studied Qabalah, and began the research for her book Quest for Dion Fortune. In January 1974, she travelled to England to meet with W.E Butler, Kenneth Grant and others who knew Dion Fortune.
In 1974 Mirazel received an M.S in Foreign Language Education and in 1983 a Master's degree in Library Science, both from Florida State University. Her book Quest for Dion Fortune was published in August of 1993 by Samuel Weiser, Inc. During this time she also operated Mystic Systems Book Service, an out-of-print occult book search service and taught a class in Qabalah.
From September through December of 1993 Mirazel studied Japanese and in March of 1994 she spent three weeks in Japan. Upon returning to the U.S she spent four months living and working in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Mirazel reads or speaks 7 languages. She is currently working on Fallen Angel, an occult romance set in New Orleans. She lives in Tallahassee, Florida with her teenage son.
Mirazel would like Friends of OPHIEL members to write, telling her their feelings as to how the group should develop. she wants to receive accounts of members' experiences with any of OPHIEL'S systems and any interesting biographical material of members. She also welcomes poetry, short stories, art work, magical diagrams and short articles on relevant topics.
Starting in the September issue of GNOSIS Magazine, Friends of OPHIEL will be running a classified ad which will be continued in future issues. We have much hope that new members will come into the fold and that Friends of OPHIEL will continue with OPHIEL'S proud tradition of active and scholarly work in practical magic.
Mirazel does not consider herself to be OPHIEL'S "successor." That person will appear later when the time is right. Mirazel wishes to utilize her powers to exert a positive influence in the Mysteries, a balance to the forces generated by Aleister Crowley. OPHIEL'S works and teachings are a perfect vehicle for accomplishing this work. Mirazel hopes that OPHIEL'S spirit will live on through Friends of OPHIEL.

THE ELEMENTAL FIRES AND THEIR COMPOUNDS
(The following is a summary of information taught by OPHIEL in his Correspondence Course in the Foundations of Occult Knowledge. It reinforces and expands on material given in his books-)
AIR. Elemental Air is the quality of Motion. The ability to move or to "get moving" is the pre-requisite to any work. In any process it is the beginning or seed idea, the "prime mover," the impetus that motivates us. In the Kabbalah system it corresponds to Atziluth, the Archetypal or Mental Plane wherein ideas have their inception. It is the first letter (Yod) of the magical formula YHVH. Yod means "hand of God" that holds all creation latent in its grasp.
These forces do not occur in the physical world in a pure state. In isolating them this way, we are creating an abstracted or purified concept which exists only in our minds. Because of this, these force-concepts do not obey the laws of the Physical Plane, nor can they be described by physical plane words, except symbolically. Man invented symbols in an effort to convey to other men some idea of the nature of these forces. These forces, in combination were personified in the shape of gods and goddesses for the same reason. These symbols or representations must never be taken for the forces themselves which are a great deal more than the symbols can express. One of the conventional ways of representing the four basic forces was as the Four Directions or Quarters of the Earth: East, South, West, North. These Quarters were further personified into the Four Winds: Eurus, Notus, Zephyrus, Boreas by the ancient Greeks. Their equivalent occur in other mythological systems as well.
FIRE. Elemental Fire is the quality of Expansion. It is the creative or gesstation period of an idea when it "grows on you," ie is enlarged upon and developed in detail. It corresponds to Briah or the Astral Plane, the upper part of which is also called the Storehouse of Images because it is here that ideas "take shape" in the form of mental images. This is the realm of the imagination, of wishes and desires, and in the formula YHVH it is the Heh or "window" into your mind through which you visualize the objects/goals of your wishes and desires.
WATER. Elemental Water is the quality of Contraction. It is a formative period when action is undertaken to make the image real. This is Yetzirah or the Etheric Plane, the realm of our feelings, which breathes life into our imaginings, inspiring and arousing us to action. In the formula YHVH, it is the letter Vav meaning "nail" which symbolizes the act of fastening yourself (your emotions) to the image of your desire/goal so that in your mind's eye it is yours already. In the process, the elaborate image shrinks to more normal, realistic proportions, and the project becomes feasible and a plan is made to carry it out.
EARTH. Elemental Earth is the end result of the previous work. It is Assiah, the Physical Plane whose quality is solidity, density, inertia. It is the fulfillment of desire, the fruits of labor, no longer the view from an inner door (Heh), but a real live scene (Heh final). The North Quarter is said to be the source from which all things start and to which all things return. In Earth or "the real world" are the materials we need to create new matter or matters. Each embodied life whether animal, mineral or vegetable is an example of this process.

WHAT IS THE KABBALAH?

The student of magic invariably comes upon the word "Kabbalah" or "Qabalah" or "Cabala" at some point in his or her researches. Then, s/he soon becomes aware of its reputation as a great source or holy book. As in every quest of the occult variety, the way is laid with traps and pifalls of all kinds. Dense fog alternates with dazzling mirages and, if the student is without a map, s/he may have to resort to trial and error methods to find what s/he wants. In this situation, a good book is like a luminous sign on a dark and windy back road and a good teacher like a friendly stranger who gives you a flashlight and points the way.
The word "Kabbalah" comes from a Hebrew word root meaning "receive" and so means "reception" or "tradition". The knowledge which the Kabbalah contains was believed to have been received by word of mouth from one generation of Jews to another. Of the many writings which can be included under the word "Kabbalah," the Sepher Yetzirah (Book of Formation) and the Sepher Ha Zohar (Book of Splendor) are considered the chief texts.
Legend claimed that the Sepher Yetzirah was received from God by the patriarch Abraham who then told it to his sons, who transmitted it to their sons, and so on until it was at last written down by certain wise men. The true author's name is unknown. According to the late Gershom Scholem, foremost authority on Kabbalah, it was written "by a Jewish Neo-Pythagorean some time between the third and sixth century." (On the Kabbalah and Its Symbolism, p. 167.) The Sepher Yetzirah was published at Mantua in 1952 but a Latin translation by the monk William Postel had already appeared in 1582. It was translated into German in 1830 and into French by Meyer Lambert in 1887.
The Sepher Yetzirah is divided into six chapters. The first presents God, the Great Architect of the Universe, and the ten Sephiroth, the messengers or Spirits of God, who create the world at his command. The last five chapters deal with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet which are said to be "Instruments of Creation," and therefore sacred and powerful.
The Sepher Ha Zohar is a miscellaneous collection of writings: interpretations of Scripture, sayings, oracles, revelations. The first two parts were written around 1280 by a Spanish rabbi named Moses de Leon. The third part had another author whose name is not known and was composed around 1300.
The two parts which are attributed to Moses de Leon belong to a class of mystical literature called "pseudepigrapha" in which the person writing gives the impression that someone else is the author. De Leon hid behind the mask of Rabbi Simeon ben Yohai, a religious teacher of the period of the Emperor Antoninus in the second century A.D. A story is told in the Talmud that Rabbi Simeon once spoke publicly against Rome. The Emperor, hearing of this, ordered that he be put to death, whereupon the rabbi took refuge with his son in a cave, dwelling there for twelve years praying and studying until the death of the Emperor. The Zohar purports to be the fruit of this experience.

Writings on these subjects began to appear in fourteenth century Europe, written in Latin, and culminated in the French and Latin Grimoires and Clavicles of Black Magic.

Another popular misunderstanding regarding the Kabbalah was that it was written in a code, the key to which was known only to "initiates". This idea may have been a misinterpretation of the traditional Hebrew methods of interpreting Scripture. These methods were:
1. Gematria.
Letters of a word are given numerical value and the sum of the word is used to explain its "inner" meaning.
2. Notarikon.
Each letter of a word is taken as the first letter of another word or the first letters of each word in a sentence are combined to form another word.
3. Temura.
Changing the position of letters in a word or sentence.
In the nineteenth century, modern occultism had its birth in the writings of Eliphas Levi. His knowledge of the Kabbalah came from two books: "La Kabbale" by Adolphe Franck, first published in 1843 and Solomon Munk's "Me'lange de Philosophie Juive et Arabe" published in 1859. Although far from perfect, these books are examples of the first intelligent research on the Kabbalah. Levi himself had no knowledge of Hebrew or Aramaic and was unacquainted with either the Sepher Yetzirah or the Zohar. Levi's principle works are his "History of Magic" and "Transcendental Magic".
Levi possessed a tremendous power to inspire others and ten years after his death, two of his followers, Gerard Encause and Stanislas de Guaita, started a school of western occultism the purpose of which was, among other things, to study the Kabbalah. Encausse published a book on the Kabbalah in 1892 under his pseudonym "Papus". It was not as extreme as Levi's books, but it was still only possible scholarship. Nevertheless, the way had been laid and with the appearance of the French version, direct access to the Kabbalah finally became possible. By this time, however, a host of fantastic notions had accumulated around it.

BRAIN CIRCUITS THAT CAUSE HALLUCINATIONS FOUND.
"The discovery could help researchers learn how to suppress schizophrenic hallucinations".

Scientists have identified brain circuits that appear to make schizophrenics hear voices and see things that aren't there. The findings may help scientists develop better treatments for hallucinations. Researchers studied six schizophrenic patients: five who heard voices and one who heard voices and saw things. The patients lay in a PET brain-scanning machine and were told to push a button when they heard voices.
Using new techniques to scan the brains and analyze the results, researchers found that during the hallucinations, interconnected areas deep within the brain's core and other areas on the surface were activated.
The core regions normally serve as meeting grounds for thoughts, emotion and perceptions, so that a person's current and past experiences can be compared with each other and associated with emotional reactions. The surface areas on the sides and the back of the brain normally process information from hearing and vision.
When the network of core and surface areas is turned on, "the brain is creating its own reality and believing it", said Dr. David Silbersweig, a neurologist and psychiatrist at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center. The work gives clues about where to look for the basic defect that turns on the hallucination circuitry, Silbersweig said. That could help scientists find new ways to suppress hallucinations.
Silbersweig, colleague Dr. Emily Stern and scientists from England reported the results in today's issue of the journal "Nature". The work was done in England. Dr. Michael Flaum, co-director of the Mental Health Clinical Research Center at the University of Iowa, said he found the work "a very credible study" that proposes an attractive hypothesis for how the brain produces schizophrenic hallucinations.
Hearing voices is the most common kind of hallucination in schizophrenia. Derogatory or threatening messages are especially common.
Five of the patients heard voices almost constantly despite taking medication.
"If they would just relax and be quiet, the voices would come to them", Silbersweig said.

BOOK REVIEWS.
"Touch of Night" * * *

In case any of you have a predjudice against romance novels which you can't back up because you've never read enough of them to form an intelligent opinion, I suggest you take a serious look at the genre. Among the plethora of poor and mediocre books are true gems, real artistic tours de force, fine well-written novels with loveable characters, compelling, believable plots and values worth emulating.
Of special interest are the romances now being published in the Fantasy, Futuristic, Time-Travel and Paranormal sub-genre. None of the authors I have read so far comes from an occult background, but some have done their research and are using their well-honed writing skills to offer terrific stories that will entertain both the occult and general reader.
One of these books is "Touch of Night" by Carin Rafferty. She tells a tale of a young woman named Ariel Dantes who goes in search of her twin brother Armand who is being held prisoner by a group of evil warlocks who belong to an old and reputable coven of white witches which they hope to take over by the use of force and black magic. The hero of the book, Lucien Morgret, a skilled white warlock who (women take note) is a man to die for. Rude and intimidating on the surface, as well as in possession of some awesome extra-sensory powers, in private he is gentle, sensitive and utterly sensual.
Personally, I have never read a literary rendition of magical polarity working that is as skillful and absorbing as Ms Rafferty's scenes in which Lucien and Ariel make love by candlelight within a magic circle drawn on the floor of Lucien's family home. I am not talking here only about the erotic power of these scenes, but also of the exquisite handling of a complicated interchange of trust, caring and respect as the lovers travel the age-old pathway that bonds a man to a woman.
Dion Fortune herself would have envied Ms. Rafferty's writing skills. For as much as all of us love Dion Fortune's novels for the occult elements, we are deceiving ourselves if we deem them anything more than passable fiction. DF's novels also fall down in their prim handling of sex and consequently of sexual polarity -- her central theme. I firmly believe that had Dion Fortune not died prematurely at age 56, she would have gone on to improve and perfect her fiction-writing skills.
You may have to go to a used paperback store to find "Touch of Night" and Ms Rafferty's other novels ("Touch of Magic", 1995 and "Touch of Lightning", 1996) but, trust me, it will be well worth the trip.

Greetings and hi there to all of you.
Believe me i was just told, for the first time, that i had neglected you. Heaven's forbid that I should do anything like this to you, hence I will attempt to give you a letter each month approx., giving you the Occult news as i have recieved it and also, I hope, to interpret the World's News according to Occult laws, ideas, set up, etc as i see it but, for heaven's sake, use these things as a basis for your own growth and own interpretation. DEVELOP. DEVELOP. DEVELOP. I am not like many teachers who want a band of sheep baa baaing after them, no not that at all. So please develop yourself.
We are coming into a season which Occultists, and others, call spring (time).
To go back a little. This Earth, as it flies around the Sun, spins/turns. Also this Earth "wobbles" a little bit from off it's spinning axis, as i remember the figure is about 18 degrees, (?) whatever the figure is, this wobble means that, apparently, the Sun "travels" north a certain distance and then turns around and goes south a certain distance.
This advance and retreat of the Sun makes for seasons.
On the one hand you have an apparently physical movement which brings on another kind of movement, a growth and fruition movement which results in animal and grain/vegetable harvests.
For untold centuries mankind recognised these changes that Nature went through and responded accordingly. We all feel a little better in Springtime.
I frankly, am not able to delineate exactly as to how this outer Physical Plane action is reproduced in Inner Plane actions (or maybe the other way around) but it surely is.
In the old savage days the Rites of Spring were proverbial, even to the committing of physical sex acts in order to "show" the Gods what was wanted of them in the way reproduction and multiplication, etc.
The notion that a man could, or should, show a God what to do is a queer idea to the Judeo-Christian but to those of you who have become acquainted with the concepts of The Astral Light- demi-urgeous it is quite clear. I have dealt with this half-God concept elsewhere. Please check it again.
Many people, and societies, have set up a system of observances for the Rites of Spring and you are at liberty to indulge in any and all of them provided you know what you are doing and why; but in this day and age you should be able to observe spring with the mind mentally, and not require any outward observancies- but you can still do it if you want to- but should know what you are doing, as said.
The practicing Occultist should be aware of the forces coursing through Nature at all times and always feel in communion with them.
Guiding, or rather integrating, himself with Inner Forces, the practicing Occultist should feel the monthly changes of the Moon Forces (called tides by some) and move accordingly. (Don't let me suggest anything to you) I always feel the last two days of the dark of the Moon, so unless i have to drive myself for some reason, i take those two days easy. Then again, I sometimes get a reaction about the fifth to eigth day of the New Moon. (I call your attention here to an Occult tool/book - The Moon Sign Book and Calender published by Llewellyn Publications. A quite useful book about Moon influences. I use the companion Calender all the time).
Dear student the object of all this study and work and interest in the Occult Forces is to give you a deftinate degree of knowledge/control over the circumstances of your Physical Plane Life, and (as i have said over and over again, like an old cliche) to better yourself.
I got as much knowledge down in my books as i could. More additions come all the time. Probably I should abandon the ordinary pursuits of living and write all the time but this i did not plan to do.
I have two little announcements to make. I am preparing an inexpensive cassette tape recorder with lessons/lectures on cassette tapes. Please inquire about this. Also, from time to time, a piece of "advanced" knowledge comes to hand. I can see where it could be used incorrectly and also to those without sufficient knowledge it would be useless. I will announce in the next letter what is available and upon a letter from you convincing me you are able to use this advanced knowledge, i will give it to you in the form of hand-written copies upon a donation.But remember this knowledge is advanced, requires some basic Occult background otherwise it is useless. Also if you cannot afford it, please reconsider asking for it, but explain fully in your letter. Also a much quicker answer is possible if you enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope and allow me to write on the bottom of your letter for short matters. I have a tentative advanced lesson on hand. How to handle love matters properly (due to so many requests about this subject. Not guarenteed).
The world situation is normal, all screwed up, and it always will be so don't expect any changes.
The action in Indo-China (no prediction) will be won by us but more than likely will just peter out and die away. It is certainly queer the number of gonephs who think they are capable of running the foreign affairs of this country with all its sources of secret information.They should not be curbed illegally but they should be argued with out in the open which no one does.
There is no greater delusion on earth, or in history, than the Bolsheviks and their childish ideas of supply and wealth.
The whole silly thing was nightmared up by a lazy-good-for-nothing bum called Carl Marx, who never earned an honest dollar in his life; he lived off his wife and friends. In order for his crazy ideas to work at all it is necessary to reduce men to slavery absolute which is against the principles of Freedom, which Freedom is the force of evolution, divine evolution. They, the Soviets, will crack up, but unfortunately very slowly.
There is one Occult Knowledge/Fact that we can use now. This Knowledge is the knowledge of the Occult phenomenon called the Group Soul (for want of a better name). Some reference was made to Group Souls in a previous vignette, please check there for it).
This word "Group Soul" came from theosophy and seems to mean (whatever it actually is) that conglomerates of any and all kinds have (roughly speaking) an organisation on the Plane above this one, the Etheric Plane, in which all similar things are connected together, and can be pictured as a great cloud-like shape even coloured and having characteristics to identify it, which cloud-like shapes must be "helped" by your imagination, and can be molded and helped by your imagination. For example, way on the "upper" Etheric would be a conglomeration in which all "Earth" things connected with, say automobiles, are "connected". (You'll have to work to understand this but this isw the way all things are and the sooner you grasp this, and understand it the quicker you learn to work Magic). Your imagination can mold the automobile Group Soul into the "form" of an automobile, for example ! ! !
So Russia has an Oversoul and to make a long story even longer - you/we can influence that Group Soul and easily as there is not much resistance there for obvious reasons. One reason being that very little is known about Group Souls and what to do about them. We will deal with this more in a later lesson, as I'm running out of space now.

The little vignette following deals with a very different subject, the subject
of reality, or what is real and what is unreal.
The subject is by no means exhausted in these few pages but some ideas are
offered.
As is usual, the understanding of this complex subject hinges upon the Knowledge
of several basic Occult concepts--the Astral Light, the Elemental Forces, the
Planes, the Caballa Tree of Life, theMagic Mirror, and others.
Some ideas on these things were given but it is now apparent to me that seperate
vignettes will have to be written about each. I can't get all these concepts in
one place, but I'll do the best I can. Look for the others to come; I hope you
like them.
We are now here on a place which no one will deny is a "hard" place. Most of
this place is immovable--inert. To metaphysicians, this earth place is
identified as the Physical Plane.
After a man has begun to think deeper thoughts than the ordinary shallow kind of
usual thoughts, he begins to wonder if there is anything existing other than
this Physical Plane.
There has always been the potent question--what happens to the dead after they
die? Do they continue to live in some other kind of world/plane/place? If so,
what is that place really like? These and many other questions of similar ilk
arise in the thinking man's life as he progresses in living. Let us see if we
can get a glimpse into this stone wall, at least as far as anyone else can.
Most all the world assumes that this Physical Plane World is "real."
Is the Physical Plane World really real?
This brings us again to the stone wall. What is real, and conversely, what is
unreal?
Consider: if you put a solid object in front of a light the solid object will
cast a shadow. There are those who consider and have said that this physical
plane is but the outer, unreal shadow cast by an inner reality. How could such a
situation come about in a case like this? We understand how, on this plane, a
"solid" article in a light does interupt the light and this interuption does
create an image against and on a background. But how can this physical plane be
a cast shadow? From whence comes, and what is, the originating light?
WHAT REAL REALITY (?) INTERUPTS THE LIGHT? Why, if this is true, do we (the
world) accept the shadow as substance instead of the innermost as reality?
These are all very different questions about a very different subject. In view
of the things we know now about the Inner Plane Forces therein, can we construct
a theory that would allow our minds to grasp a conception that could explain the
unrealness of the apparent real?
In previous vignettes, we studied the series of Planes "up" from this outer. We
studied the Elemental forces. We studied the Astral Light. We studied the
demiurge, the half-God idea. (I just noted in the dictionary this deftinition--a
Gnostic subordinate deity who is the creator of the material world! Also here is
another deftinition--a Platonic subordinate deity who fashions the sensible (?)
world in the light of eternal ideas.) Surely some kind of a theory can be
constructed out of this known inner material and its known inner
characteristics.
There is one more analytical foray we must make before we can proceed with the
development of this theory.
In our previous lessons, books, and vignettes, we mentioned the elemental force
of Akasha. Previously we had no occasion to elaborate upon the qualities of this
Elemental Force due to the fact that it was a strange Force and different from
the other Elemental Forces in many ways. The actions/functions of the Elemental
Forces of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth were rather simple and easily
understandable but, up to now, Akasha didn't seem to me to have a simple, easy,
understandable working function until i came to the subject of this essay, and
now I seem to see, in a blinding flash of illumination, the function of Akasha
in the chain of actions which could explain this shadow world, or at least
understand how its existance could come into being.
The main working function of Akasha is said to be the characteristic of change.
AKASHA CHANGES INTO ALL THINGS and in its original form also exists BETWEEN all
changes. This instrument then sounds like the ideal medium upon which to build a
working theory of the creation of this shadow world.
Let us proceed. I assume that you have some basic knowledge about the Caballa
tree of Life diagram. For the purpose of this vignette, assume that the Astral
Light enters at the top and goes down the Tree and stops at the bottom. The
bottom is solid matter and the top is non-matter.
For the purpose of an "understanding" theory, we can consider the Tree of Life
as a piece of machinery (Dion Fortune once referred to the "Machinery of the
Universe") that manufactures "solid Matter" out of "non-solid" Light.
This is certainly very much of a simplification, but please, in your future
studies of the Caballa, meditate upon this idea about the Tree.
However, i would now like to return to our theme--Shadow against Substance and
set up another different kind of theory.
This vignette may seem to you to be rather ragged and disjointed, but please
keep in mind that this subject is one terrific big Idea and can't really be made
simple and plain in this small a place. Also it will be necessary to write a
number of others to supplement this first single presentation. So disregard the
apparent disjointedness and study the main ideas as given and get them firmly in
your mind.
To resume: we said that the Light, the Astral Light (my favourite name for the
demiurge) comes into this Physical Cosmos at the top of the Tree of Life as the
Astral Light.
Now the Tree of Life pattern is already there. (We are not here referring in any
way to the original beginning or any original beginning and up from "below" come
PICTURES--DESIRES--IDEAS which reach the archetypal plane as desires, perhaps

prayers or, as one occult author-teacher said, as demands made upon the idea of
whatever kind of God the demander had in mind when he voiced/pictured his

There is another tremendous subject for study here at this point which i will
have to make the subject of another vignette. This other subject concerns the
manner-agency in which the other Elemental Forces function in this descending
ladder from archetype to final form and will take another lesson to merely
scratch the surface. But please, you do some work on it, some meditation, and
contemplation.
Now, with all these previous ideas stated and out of the way, we can return to
the idea of shadow and substance.
Remember that the Knowledge just given to you was greatly unknown in the dark
ages past; hence, when a dark age philosopher did conceive the idea of a shadow
and a substance he did not have the benefit of Knowledge about the Caballa, the
Tree of Life, and the half-God, as there was no printing, more than 90 per cent
of the people could not read or write; even if the material had been printed,
which it never really was even to this day put down completely and clearly. You
can believe as you please but you are getting occult dynamite in these writings
that is available nowhere else.
So now you should be able to see clearly that this Physical Plane World is truly
a/the shadow cast upon your perception--a shadow cast from the Astral Light, the
half-God, shining on the archetype Akasha, which (matter) shadow then comes down

understanding, the Physical Plane truly is an "unreal" shadow only and the TRUE
SUBSTANCE is the Inner Plane Matrix--the Archetype only.

Life, indicating on your drawing the place that the subject matter in the
vignette pertains to.Some of these Tree of Life indications are not too clear,
but do your best. As you progress and find that you were not correct in the
first attempt, change the indications as you learn more.

The little vignette following deals with a very different subject, the subject
of reality, or what is real and what is unreal.
The subject is by no means exhausted in these few pages but some ideas are
offered.
As is usual, the understanding of this complex subject hinges upon the Knowledge
of several basic Occult concepts--the Astral Light, the Elemental Forces, the
Planes, the Caballa Tree of Life, theMagic Mirror, and others.
Some ideas on these things were given but it is now apparent to me that seperate
vignettes will have to be written about each. I can't get all these concepts in
one place, but I'll do the best I can. Look for the others to come; I hope you
like them.
We are now here on a place which no one will deny is a "hard" place. Most of
this place is immovable--inert. To metaphysicians, this earth place is
identified as the Physical Plane.
After a man has begun to think deeper thoughts than the ordinary shallow kind of
usual thoughts, he begins to wonder if there is anything existing other than
this Physical Plane.
There has always been the potent question--what happens to the dead after they
die? Do they continue to live in some other kind of world/plane/place? If so,
what is that place really like? These and many other questions of similar ilk
arise in the thinking man's life as he progresses in living. Let us see if we
can get a glimpse into this stone wall, at least as far as anyone else can.
Most all the world assumes that this Physical Plane World is "real."
Is the Physical Plane World really real?
This brings us again to the stone wall. What is real, and conversely, what is
unreal?
Consider: if you put a solid object in front of a light the solid object will
cast a shadow. There are those who consider and have said that this physical
plane is but the outer, unreal shadow cast by an inner reality. How could such a
situation come about in a case like this? We understand how, on this plane, a
"solid" article in a light does interupt the light and this interuption does
create an image against and on a background. But how can this physical plane be
a cast shadow? From whence comes, and what is, the originating light?
WHAT REAL REALITY (?) INTERUPTS THE LIGHT? Why, if this is true, do we (the
world) accept the shadow as substance instead of the innermost as reality?
These are all very different questions about a very different subject. In view
of the things we know now about the Inner Plane Forces therein, can we construct
a theory that would allow our minds to grasp a conception that could explain the
unrealness of the apparent real?
In previous vignettes, we studied the series of Planes "up" from this outer. We
studied the Elemental forces. We studied the Astral Light. We studied the
demiurge, the half-God idea. (I just noted in the dictionary this deftinition--a
Gnostic subordinate deity who is the creator of the material world! Also here is
another deftinition--a Platonic subordinate deity who fashions the sensible (?)
world in the light of eternal ideas.) Surely some kind of a theory can be
constructed out of this known inner material and its known inner
characteristics.
There is one more analytical foray we must make before we can proceed with the
development of this theory.
In our previous lessons, books, and vignettes, we mentioned the elemental force
of Akasha. Previously we had no occasion to elaborate upon the qualities of this
Elemental Force due to the fact that it was a strange Force and different from
the other Elemental Forces in many ways. The actions/functions of the Elemental
Forces of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth were rather simple and easily
understandable but, up to now, Akasha didn't seem to me to have a simple, easy,
understandable working function until i came to the subject of this essay, and
now I seem to see, in a blinding flash of illumination, the function of Akasha
in the chain of actions which could explain this shadow world, or at least
understand how its existance could come into being.
The main working function of Akasha is said to be the characteristic of change.
AKASHA CHANGES INTO ALL THINGS and in its original form also exists BETWEEN all
changes. This instrument then sounds like the ideal medium upon which to build a
working theory of the creation of this shadow world.
Let us proceed. I assume that you have some basic knowledge about the Caballa
tree of Life diagram. For the purpose of this vignette, assume that the Astral
Light enters at the top and goes down the Tree and stops at the bottom. The
bottom is solid matter and the top is non-matter.
For the purpose of an "understanding" theory, we can consider the Tree of Life
as a piece of machinery (Dion Fortune once referred to the "Machinery of the
Universe") that manufactures "solid Matter" out of "non-solid" Light.
This is certainly very much of a simplification, but please, in your future
studies of the Caballa, meditate upon this idea about the Tree.
However, i would now like to return to our theme--Shadow against Substance and
set up another different kind of theory.
This vignette may seem to you to be rather ragged and disjointed, but please
keep in mind that this subject is one terrific big Idea and can't really be made
simple and plain in this small a place. Also it will be necessary to write a
number of others to supplement this first single presentation. So disregard the
apparent disjointedness and study the main ideas as given and get them firmly in
your mind.
To resume: we said that the Light, the Astral Light (my favourite name for the
demiurge) comes into this Physical Cosmos at the top of the Tree of Life as the
Astral Light.
Now the Tree of Life pattern is already there. (We are not here referring in any
way to the original beginning or any original beginning and up from "below" come
PICTURES--DESIRES--IDEAS which reach the archetypal plane as desires, perhaps
you could call them prayers. (I have recieved no knowledge about how

Los Tatwas:
Según el Maestro Huiracocha los Tatwas son precisamente esas vibraciones del éter que están presentes en todo momento y varían según la hora del día correspondiente. Las vibraciones del éter (Tatwas) producen entonces sus efectos en la materia ya que al afectar de alguna manera esa energía presente en los diferentes niveles de energía dentro de las órbitas de los electrones en los átomos, puede producir desprendimientos de éstos lo que constituye una liberación de energía que puede manifestarse como una corriente eléctrica muy sutil.
